January 2005
We finally start building our house

Torsten welds the steel posts from 100x100x4 galvanized RHS

22 posts have to be concreted in, each at least 1200mm deep. All posts are connected by 300mm x 200mm trenches and 2 x 16mm reinforcing rods. All in all Torsten used 12 cubic metres of concrete for the trenches and post holes - all mixed by hand!

The sub base of the house is built using 22 poles. The highest one is 3200mm above ground level, the lowest one only 700mm.  Silke keeps the posts aligned while the concrete sets.

The three bearers supporting the house are  triple 45mm x 190mm beams. For the verandah single 45mm x 240mm beams are sufficient.

All joists are 190mm high to allow installation of 190mm floor insulation. The joists are spaced 450mm apart and doubled under external and internal walls. They are 35mm thick and held by steel brackets and a total of over 600 bolts!

The weather:
December and January surprised us  with warm and dry weather. Most days were sunny with blue skies. Temperatures were mostly in the mid twenties and only occasionally over thirty degrees Celsius. The nights were cool. Some days brought light showers, but "real rain" only held us up for two or three days in total.

Sunsets at Abels Bay are often spectacular
