August 2005
Winter in Tasmania

August 8th, 2005

Rain, snow, storm and a warm fire in the woodstove. It's winter in  Tasmania but it's also very cosy inside!

This area will be partitioned off by large sliding doors at a later stage. The 240l hot water system, the washing machine and the dryer are permanently installed already. This small floor area is already done on Tassie Oak,  the ceiling in pine.

August 8th, 2005

over the last two weeks we installed tongue and groove pine linings on the upstairs and downstairs ceilings. R3.8 glass wool provides insulation. The window trimmings in the workshop are finished as well.

August 10th, 2005

today we got our new big water tank (23,000l). Together with the driver we could just manage to roll it up the driveway and place it into position.

August 10th, 2005

It rained all day long. On Tasmania's highlands heavy snow storms are expected. In the evening the temperature drops to just above zero degrees Celsius. A few thick white snowflakes fall. It hardly ever snows at sea level and everybody is really excited. Unfortunately it's not quite enough to build a snow man yet!

August 10th, 2005

last night it snowed! For the first time in many years Abels Bay has turned white.

August 20th, 2005

the whole building is now clad internally in gyprock sheets. The stairs to the lofts are finished, too.

August23rd, 2005

after gyprocking for a full week we need a break! The sun is shining and we decide to drive to the other side of the Huon and up to the Hartz Mountains. It's icy cold up here and we won't tackle the four hour climb to the peak in the snow.

we always wondered if you could see our house from the Western side of the Huon. Jutta and Andreas Wagner run the Trans-Ocean Sailing Club Base of Tasmania and live at Police Point directly across from Abels Bay. We pay them a surprise visit and are invited to a cup of coffee. The photo below is taken from their verandah. It's a combination of three individual photos taken with a tele-lens. From here it's about three kilometres to our house (red arrow).

and this is the opposite view. The red arrow shows Jutta und Andreas Wagner's house. This photo was already taken in July. It's about 75 kilometres by road and three directly across the sea.

August 28th, 2005

the internal walls are finished! After three coats of paint they look really good.

The flue for the stove downstairs can be seen between the windows.
