July 2005
We are moving
July 1st, 2005

It rained last night. Our donga is quite wet inside, down in the valley our winter creek is running. Luckily our future workshop is ready and we can move in. We will live down here until the main section of the building is fitted out.

July 2nd, 2005

The workshop walls are insulated really well. Double glazed windows and R 4.0 insulation will keep heat losses down.

July 2nd, 2005

a wood stove keeps the workshop dry and warm. What a change from living in the damp and draughty donga!

We got the building permit for the extension

Building our own house was much easier -up to this point- than we had anticipated. We decided to extend the project and build an extension as well. The bathroom and the toilet will be larger than originally planned. Together with a guest room they will form a separate building.  In the main building a proper staircase will provide easy access to the lofts. A laundry has room for hot water system, washing machine dryer and freezer.

July 11th, 2005

the excavator levels the ground behind the house to make room for the extension.

a 25,000 liter water tank will later be placed next to the grey water tanks. Now is the right time to make room for it.

the new drive way

July 17th, 2005

last night it snowed again above the tree line on the Hartz mountains

July 19th, 2005

our donga will be picked up tomorrow. We have to move it downhill and position it right in the middle of our road so that the tilt truck can load it.  A jack, a few pieces of timber and steel and a fair bit of patience make the job easy.

July 30th, 2005

more work for the excavator. The driveway now leads all the way up to the house and into the carport as well.
