Microclimate
This pond in the chook area was Klaas's project, mainly because he wanted large fish in a garden-pond as a hobby. He dug it by hand when he was thirteen years old and it became a lot more than just a fish-pond. He planted pigeon-peas around it and after they had grown we noticed that the pond and the plants around it had created a different microclimate in this area. A harsh dry area was transformed into a humid sheltered place.
Where before only weeds had survived, now grew bananas, lilies, a fig tree, a mandarine tree, a mulberry tree, ginger, sweet potatoes, lemongrass and a lot more. Klaas became quite interested in permaculture, especially in the concept of edges and started creating additions to his pond along the lines of the Chinampa-System.

Raised Garden Beds
The vegetables and edible flowers in the raised garden beds were rotated after harvest. Fertilizer consisted mainly of diluted liquid from our worm farm. After harvest the non-edible parts of the plants were slashed and left in the beds.
Because of the many brick walls this area was sheltered from the dry winds and  from direct sun. Many vegetables that normally grow in Mount Isa only in winter, we were able to grow all year.
