The Herb Spiral

A convenient place to grow herbs and edible flowers is a herb spiral close to your kitchen door. In the small area of the spiral different plants find different niches to grow in. Water runs down from the top. The area at the base of the spiral is moist. It is possible to create a small swamp or pond at this place.

In our herb spiral the herbs grew permanently and the flowers changed according to season and need, e.g. insectary flowers and edible flowers.  The top of the herb spiral is dry. The side exposed to the midday sun is hot, the opposite side much cooler. Herbs are planted at the spots best suited to their requirements.

Our herb spiral was situated in the same area as the potting shed and the raised vegetable beds and benefited from the same sheltered conditions. The laundry door opened into this area which made access to the house easy.
